How Modern Action Figures Are Prototyped
"Basically your job is to observe something as obsessively as possible." That's insight from Jason Frailey, describing his job as a toy sculptor in this mini-documentary about how modern action figures and collectibles are made. Mile Deep productions visited the design studios of toy company NECA and interviewed its toy sculptors about the process of prototyping clay figures and then molding and casting them into durable plastic prototypes. It's great to see the attention to detail these sculptors pay to toy design and how they angst over the details that they know fans and collectors will spot in the final product. One aspect of toy design that this video doesn't go into, though, is the painting process for mass toy production. That's something that can make or break a sculpt.
