This Nixie Tube Chess Set is a Testament to Your Soldering Skills

By Will Smith

Nixie tubes display numbers or letters using a cold cathode-style tube. This is a chess set that uses 32 Nixie tubes as pieces.

This chess set is gorgeous. Instead of traditional carved, machined, or cast pieces, Tony from Lasermad built a chess set using Nixie tubes as the pieces. When the power is off, the pieces are seemingly identical, but when power is applied to the board, each Nixie tube lights up to indicate which piece it is. The individual pieces are gorgeous, but when put together, the effect is amazing.

Tony's putting together a kit order now, so keep an eye on this post if you're interested, and want to order one. He doesn't have a price yet, but I can only assume it's going to be spendy. It also looks like there will be a massive amount of SMT soldering to assemble the kit, which can be tricky if you've never done it before.
