I stumbled onto Rebecca Mock's art through a New York Times story from last year. The New York Times, like many other news outlets, have embraced the trend of using animated GIFs for story headers (though they may be moving on to HTML5 video for future features). Buzzfeed has done it well, and I really like the subtlety of NYT's GIF use. Mock's animated GIFs embrace the high compression profile of the format, and I like that it's original art as opposed to a processed video clip. This one is my favorite. Journalism school Poynter interviewed Mock about her "quiet GIFs". Work like hers really makes me wish for a dedicated animated GIF designer.
